Cameron's birth story - 11.29.99

I'm enjoying taking these little walks down memory lane! Cameron, our first born, just turned 15 a week ago. How is that even possible? I still think of him being 8, crazy in love with Mario and crash and his beloved blue DS that Jesus gave him (and that's a story for another time!) :)
Tim and I were married on July 4, 1998. After a summer internship in Abilene Texas, we headed back to Springfield Missouri to finish our last year of college. Or two haha. By the time spring rolled around, I was preparing for my senior honors recital, spending long hours in the practice rooms, with Beethoven, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky as my companions. I remember one afternoon in March, I just had a feeling. My period was a little late, and I just felt like I needed to take a pregnancy test. So I sent Tim off to the drugstore, and an hour later, we had our answer! I remember feeling a big rush of excitement, followed by a crash of anxiety. We didn't have health insurance! And isn't that what every newlywed couple at BBC ended up with their first year of marriage? A baby?? None of our other couple friends were even entertaining the idea of babies!! I remember calling my dear old daddy, telling him the news in tears, because I didn't know how we could possibly afford to have a baby while in college. And the sweet, patient Holy Spirit spoke through my dad. My dad, who is the father of 5, lovingly reassured me that this little tiny baby growing in my womb, wasn't a surprise to our Heavenly Father! He knew exactly when this little one would begin, and it wasn't a mistake. It wasn't an accident!! No babies are accidents - they are incredible gifts and hidden blessings. "God will provide," dad firmly said. And He did!! All of our medical bills were taken care of through a pregnancy care program that we qualified for, and we didn't owe one cent! How's that for provision?!
It took FOREVER to get a bump. I watched my belly daily, as did my friends who were over the moon excited to see this pregnancy :) there wasn't much in the way of cute maternity clothes, so I started out borrowing my sister in law's clothes from her last pregnancy. I remember going to the mall one day, and I spotted a new store called Motherhood Maternity.
What.
Of course I dragged Tim in with me, and danced with joy at the beautiful selections that swung in front of me!! Maternity jeans that were snug?! Cute little skirts and dresses that didn't look look like they were tents?? Tops that didn't hang down to my ankles!!?
Yes please!!!!!
I wore that pair of maternity jeans into the ground. I remember getting so many compliments on them, from people that were shocked I had stylish jeans while pregnant. Yes, we lived that long ago, my dear children. The struggle.was.real.
That summer, Nani and Poppi came to visit, and set up camp at a small campground nearby. I spent the afternoons w mom and dad while Tim worked, and together we hung out in the evenings w them. Uncle Dan came by too. One afternoon, I felt crampy and started freaking out that I was in preterm labor. Mom and dad rushed me to the emergency room where I found out quickly that's the last place you show up pregnant. The nurse freaked out, threw me in a WHEELCHAIR and raced over to labor and delivery. I was terrified!!!
I had a urinary tract infection.
In October, we attended a birthing class. We learned all about labor and delivery, pain management, breathing, and on the last night of class, all the dads got to strap on a maternity pack that simulated a 9 mo pregnant belly. It was hilarious!! And ridiculous. There's NO way that stupid pack even remotely gave those guys ANY idea of trying to roll over in bed with a huge bowling ball in front, or the constant heart burn, or the 'waddle' you so desperately tried not to admit you were feeling when you walked, or the gazillion times a night you had to get up to pee ... We also saw a short video of an actual birth - front and center. All of our jaws dropped. And then they passed around the epidural needle. Tim almost passed out. I was convinced I wasn't going to need one of those!! (Note to former self ... you're an idiot)
So finally, my 9th month rolled around. I was uncomfortable. My belly felt enormous. I was having these constant contractions that I was SURE were the 'real thing' but my doctor kindly informed me every week that I was still only 1 cm dilated. The entire month. 1 cm. I walked and walked. Thanksgiving rolled around, and Tim's mom and dad came to spend two days with us. Grammy was convinced that I would go into labor while she was there. We went to the mall. And walked. And walked. And walked!!! Nothing. Saturday came, and they reluctantly got into the car and drove home. I assured them nothing was going to happen. My due date wasn't until December 6!! The next day was Sunday. While sitting in church, those stupid Braxton hicks contractions came back. I ignored them, and shoved a hymnal behind my aching back. I was secretly timing them though ;) all morning long, the contractions were around 10-15mn apart. Bleh.
'I'm starving,' I announced to Tim after church. 'Lets go to fazoli's!! Oh by the way, I'm having some contractions. No big deal. Blah blah blah. Let's eat!!'
He looked a little concerned but we went anyway. So we ate and returned to our cozy little apartment. I started working on my puzzle, and Tim watched football. An hour or so later, I finally admitted I was feeling miserable.
'These really hurt!' I complained. Ok. Maybe this time we should go to the hospital. Nah - they're just going to tell me nothing's wrong.
'We will wait one more hour,' Tim said firmly. 'If the contractions don't stop you're going in.'
'Fine,' I huffed. I laid on the couch and kept timing.
Ok. So maaayybe they're coming every 5 mn. Maybe we should go in??
Off we go to the hospital!! I went straight to labor and delivery this time, avoided the ER drama, and was put in a nice little room to be monitored. The nurse checked me, and after waiting with bated breath, she says,
'You're 2 cm dilated.'
Uhhhh. After an entire DAY of contractions?! What kind of crap is this??  She looked at me sympathetically, and told me they wouldn't admit me unless I was at least 3 cm. I was so upset, and ready to cry. Tired, hurting and being told I would have to go back home again?! The sweet nurse had pity on me and said she would keep an eye on me for another hour.
Ok. Pray pray hard that I start dilating more!! An hour passed and the nurse came back in to check me.
'2.5 cm dilated!' She announced. 'Ok, I'm not supposed to do this, but I think it's ridiculous to send you home.'
She told the dr I was 3 cm :) :)
I got transferred to a labor and delivery room!!! I got in! Yeah!!!
It was amusing to hear the doctor when he checked me and said in confusion,
'Uh. You're barely at 3, really more 2.5 cm dilated ... well, there's no point moving you out now.....' I just played dumb.
Buh-bayummm!!
So it ended up being an incredibly long labor. Being in the hospital didn't magically speed up my labor, much to my dismay. I was stuck at 3 cm. hours passed. Still 3. Come on baby boy!!! The dr came in again, and relayed his concerns over a long labor.
Cameron was lying face up instead of face down. Which meant he was kind of stuck - face up meant his little skull couldn't compress like it was supposed to in the birth canal and slide him down. So my labor couldn't progress. They got me on my hands and knees and I rocked back and forth. Changed positions. Rocked again ... nothing. Grrrr!!! The dr mentioned that if the baby didn't turn over, I might be looking at the possibility of a c-section. Noooo!!! I sooo wanted to have a normal delivery!! We prayed. Called mom and dad to pray. And wouldn't you know it .... Jesus turned that little boy around!
Finally I started to dilate!!! After 24 hours of labor, I was finally ready to push. And by the way - sooo thankful I ended up agreeing to an epidural. What a beautiful thing that was!!
Natural labor is for the birds.
Yeah!! I thought - it's almost over!!
Uhhh .... an hour passed. Pushing. And more pushing. No baby. I pushed for almost 2.hours. Almost ready to give up. Exhausted and feeling like I was going to puke with every push.
Then he finally came!!!
At 9:30 am, Monday, November 29, Cameron Ryan Holman was born!!!
Nani and poppi had driven all night and arrived exactly one hour later :) and brought donuts. What amazing parents I have!!! :)
It was the most amazing experience of my young life. I was 21 years old, daddy was 22. I swaddled, cuddled and learned how to nurse that tiny little boy. It wasn't easy - but I was so thankful to have my mom with me that first week! I couldn't have done it without my own momma. She cooked for us, cleaned, held her little grandson and held me together during all that postpartum craziness I was experiencing for the first time!!
So dear, sweet little Cameron. You were planned and expected from your Heavenly Father. And lovingly anticipated from your mommy and daddy here. You are our first precious little child - and my memories of those early sweet days with you will never be forgotten! All of your firsts were my firsts too!! We did it together - and you will always have that first chunk of my momma's heart dear boy. I love you cammy!!

Claire's birth story

I don't know if I've ever written down the story of my sweet daughter's birth! Pulling from memory 13 yrs ago doesn't really seem so hard when I think how precious the whole time was. Cameron was 13mo old when we found out we were pregnant with our second child. We lived in Mishawaka, Indiana at the time, where Tim was the youth pastor at Twin City Baptist Church. I had a great pregnancy, nothing scary or unusual. I remember my doctor was a Chinese guy, Dr. Kim. He was one of the best ob/gyns in the area, just really hard to understand sometimes! This was in 2001, when maternity clothes were just starting to become fashionable. Before, when I was pregnant with Cameron, I remember struggling to find cute clothes to wear that actually fit me!! Motherhood maternity had some pretty decent things to wear but ran kind of large so a lot didn't really work for me. When I was pregnant with Claire, I remember shopping at target a LOT for cute outfits :) (and the obsession with target hasn't changed in 13 yrs ha!)

I loved dressing up my bump! By the time 19 weeks rolled around, we were super excited for our ultrasound to see if we were having the girl i so desperately wanted!! I remember calling my dad, asking him to please please pray the baby was a girl. He graciously obliged:) I had to guzzle down 40 oz of water less than an hour before my appt. really?? 40 oz of water, and then hold it all in for 2hrs?! I remember having to go to the restroom so so desperately it hurt to walk. I literally hobbled into the doctor's office. Lying on the table brought a little relief, only because the scan took my mind off my pounding bladder. Baby looked perfect!! Aaannnnd .... Unfortunately, the cord was perfectly woven through the baby's legs, and the tech couldn't get a clear enough picture of the gender. What.
"Uhh, should I turn over? Can I take a quick walk??" I hesitantly asked ...
Ok, I turned from side to side. No go. By the time 15 mn passed, the tech firmly said we just wouldn't be able to find out the gender today. Maybe at a later ultrasound??
Um. Well, our insurance would only cover one ultrasound unless medically necessary. Darn it!!!! How in the world was I going to make it another 5 months until I knew what we were having?!? After a quick (long) stop at the bathroom, we dejectedly returned home. So we spent the next several months planning for baby X :) I bought mostly neutral sleepers, along with a few pink girly outfits just in case!!!

Claire's due date was August 23, which was a Thursday. The day before I reached 39 weeks, I remember waking up in the middle of the night aching and mildly cramping. I ran a warm bath at 2 am, hoping the water would ease them and it did. The next morning, while making Cameron's breakfast and cleaning up the house, I remember feeling that achiness and cramping periodically, but it really didn't seem like anything major. I had a doctors appt that afternoon anyway, so I figured I would mention it to him then. We ate lunch, then buckled Cam into his car seat and drove to South Bend to see Dr. Kim! Tim stayed out in the car with cam, because he'd fallen asleep and we didn't want to wake him since it was nap time. I sat in the waiting room, leafing through magazines. We didn't have smartphones with Facebook on them yet!! :) When they called my name, I went back and talked with the doctor. He asked how I was feeling and I mentioned casually that i had been a little crampy and achy, but really nothing very painful. He nodded and then checked me .... His head popped up and he said calmly ....
"You are 5.5 cm dilated, Mrs. Holman. You need go to hospital right now!"
"What??"
"You are in labor. You need to go to the hospital. Go to the front desk and tell the nurse we are going to the hospital. You are having a baby today. I will meet you there."
"What??" I was kind of in shock. Cameron's labor took FOREVER!!! How was I possibly already halfway done with labor?? I walked quickly out to the parking garage where Tim and cam were and told him the news. I didn't have a bag packed - we had nobody to take care of Cameron!! We called Tim's parents, who lived 4.5 hrs away and were on alert ... Come now!! We are having the baby!! We drove back home, I was a nervous wreck. Packed a quick bag, called a friend who lived down the road and asked if they could keep Cameron until our parents picked him up, probably around 5 hours. They gladly took him, and after we dropped him off, we finally made it to the hospital!
After I had gotten checked in and my IV taken care of, we waited for the dr to come and break my water. He came, quickly broke them, and I remember things picking up quickly after that, meaning, contractions became much more noticeable! I got my epidural and laid back to wait. We got to the hospital around 3, and by 630, Tim was getting hungry. He decided to run down and see what he could find to eat. I was nervous with him leaving and asked him to hurry up!! After he left, I looked over and realized he had left our only cell phone on the table by my bed. Nice.
I started getting shaky, and my teeth were chattering. I  couldn't stop shaking and the nurse looked over, and said - ohhh, let me check you!!
10 cm.
what?!
Where's Tim?!
Where is my husband?! I can't start pushing if he's not here?! The dr. came in, checked me too, and said - yes. You need to start pushing. You are completely dilated and baby is coming!! I was a mess. Where the hell did tim go?! I thought he'd just gone downstairs to the cafeteria!? Not even 2 mn later, tim casually walked into the room.
Oh hey there. No big deal - I'm just FULLY DILATED while I had.no.idea.where.you.were!!!!!
(Found out later he had walked to BURGER KING to get a freaking burger!)
I literally don't think I pushed more than 5 times and out the baby came!!
Out SHE came!

Claire Elisabeth Holman was born at 7:34 pm, August 16, 2001.

Ohhhh I was just over the moon to have my baby girl!!! Holding her, nursing her and cuddling her while in the hospital was the most beautiful, precious experience of my life.
We couldn't wait to come home :) Cameron was very gentle with Claire, although he largely just ignored her, maybe hoping this new, noisy little thing wouldn't be staying long!! ;)
For several weeks, poor little Claire hated her bassinet, and hated being put down to sleep. We set up the swing in our room and that was the only way she would sleep for a block of time in the middle of the night. I remember her being 3 days old, daddy and Cameron had gone to church that Sunday, and I dressed Claire in her first pretty pink flowered outfit. Daddy come home, saw sweet little Claire all darling in pink and his heart just.melted. He said it finally just hit him that we really do have a baby girl!!
3 weeks after Claire was born, I had my first experience with kidney stones. UGH!!!!! It was horrible - and having to avoid most of the pain meds because I was nursing made it even harder. Thankfully it all passed in 24 hours and I didn't have another repeat experience until after the birth of caloway.
So my dear, sweet baby Claire - how truly loved, prayed, hoped for you were!! What a balm for the soul, a ray of light, hope and comfort you were during a difficult period of ministry!!! And God saw fit to bless us with only one precious little girl. You are a gift. A hidden treasure. A surprise totally worth waiting for! I think God moved your cord on purpose so that we could experience the unmatched anticipation of not knowing who was being formed in my belly, and relish in the sweetness of expectations, longing and hope being made in the form of our own darling daughter.
We love you so very much dear Claire!!!!!

Weekend with Holmans

We spent the weekend down in brookville Indiana. Tim's grandparents, Mamie and papa, were celebrating 66 yrs of marriage and 50 yr anniversary of Hillcrest Baptist, so the whole weekend was spent honoring them!
It was so neat for my kids to sit in church Sunday evening and hear the traditional church tim and I grew up with - including the organ and piano haha!! Cameron leaned over during the HYMNS and said, what is this? It sounds like we're at a baseball game!! I laughed and told him this was the church daddy and I grew up with :)
Papa preached Sunday night and all my kids got to hear his testimony of coming to Christ and the story of Hillcrest, how papa and Mamie started the church back in 1964. I wish it could be written down!! To hear how God provided and orchestrated all of the events in their lives to bring them right here - all of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren stood on stage and honored them. It was very precious!! All of them know the Lord and 7 of the families are in full-time ministry. Pretty awesome legacy! I'm so thankful my kids got to spend that time with cousins, grandparents and great grandparents. We all drove to Taco Bell after church Sunday night ... let me tell you how that went down.
14 adults and 18 children. 7 children 3 and under. 9 pm, nobody had eaten since lunch. Screaming babies, toddlers jumping over grimy plastic seats, harried parents pulling said toddlers from squirting drinks on the drink machines, and darting back behind the counter. Trying to order food for 32 people from the one employee behind the counter who wasn't a day over 19. Macky said he needed to go potty and decided to almost walk OUT of the restaurant to the car and use his frog potty .. thank God for aunt Jess who saw him and took him to the bathroom, where we found him after a frantic run in and around Taco Bell. But y'know what? It was pretty priceless spending that crazy hour with people you love and haven't seen in years. I think we will always look back and say, hey, remember that one time we ALL went to Taco Bell after church ...
The kids all got to spend the wknd at Grammy and Grampy's house! It certainly wasn't without its own drama ha! There were a few moments where you just shook your head, but we all really enjoyed and needed that time w family!
Levi fist-punched baby Micah in the face for no reason, Mac and Jesse ran off every moment they got, Grammy freaked out thinking she lost Caloway, and we probably spent 6 hours on Saturday out in the baking hot sun and 90 degree temps until we couldn't take it anymore!!

Happy 2nd birthday, Levi!

How has my littlest baby boy suddenly turned into a toddler? My sweet, squishy, dimpled-kneed baby now has longer legs, can run and keep up with macky, can talk and scream and ... throw fits??! Yep. Out of all 5 of my kids, the last little turned out to be my tantrum thrower. Ohhh, but he is such a lover!! Levi is definitely momma's boy for now, and I have no intention of changing that! There's plenty of time to share him later :)
He surprises us with how quickly he can assert himself. While typically the older brothers can boss their little brother around, Levi has no problem LOUDLY declaring his discontent with a situation. He's been known to push mac around if he decides he's being taken advantage of. Here are a few of the things I want to remember about Levi being 2:

Bwanky and bee
Hold you!
Nana! Apple! Bye! No.
'Mere! 'Mere, 'mere!
Levi? Mama!!
Rabby. Oh, rab!!
Stinky blue crocs
Sitting on the couch w a blankie, toes sticking out
Mok! before bed
Singing Jesus loves me every time he goes to sleep, rocking in the chair
Singing Thomas tunes 'ten!' 'Narrow gauge engines'
Spilling paint all over the carpet with macky (ugh)
Creen!! (Powdered sugar white cream donut)

Oh, there are so many more things I could list ... I am a little bit heartsick at the thought of my tiny little baby growing up. My last little piece of babyhood is growing dimmer and dimmer, and I'm looking ahead to so many big kid things and discoveries, when all I want to do is hold my little boy tight, grab his bwanky and bee, and rock him to sleep. Whispering how much Jesus loves him in his ear, while his eyelashes flutter, and sleep softly drifts down around his little self.
I love you, Levi Anderson Holman! Happy birthday darling.

Roadblocks

I am an idea person. Creative in random bursts, but not a consistent flow of ideas. My follow-through, however, is less than ideal.
I'm kinda in a funk on who I am lately, and what I'm good at! What I'm ultimately supposed to do with my life, other than raise my 5 children and be a good wife to tim. I went to college to study music and become a piano teacher. I'm over it. I taught piano for close to 20 yrs and I can't really say it's ever been incredibly rewarding. A good (emphasis) SMALL source of extra money but that's about it. Never really had that one breakout student who excelled and I just knew they'd love music the rest of their life! How is that possible, by the way?! Out of all those kids ... I tossed around the idea of doing hair for awhile, but going back to school with babies and toddlers was unappealing and mostly not possible at the time.
I seriously have thought about becoming a lactation consultant but that also would include quite a bit of schooling and training. I'm passionate about breastfeeding and love the idea of helping other moms enjoy that special relationship.
I'm just wondering what I would be REALLY good at - what's my niche?! I don't think I could ever be good at sales, because I don't like things pushed on me ... I've been asked many times to sell stuff, from skin care to jewelry, to candles. I'm frustrated. I really don't know what I'm good at anymore. I don't know when will be the right time to pursue something on my own, especially with two toddlers and three school age kids at home. There are days I just want to be productive and finish something, and I look at the stacks of unfinished projects and sigh. I love sewing and creating things with fabric, but am limited in my knowledge and equipment. I love decorating and have been told I'm good at it, but don't honestly know if I could help anyone else decorate!
Here are a few things I wish I could learn to do:
1. Learn to quilt
2. Learn calligraphy
3. Learn how to be a lactation consultant
4. Learn how to help people decorate
5. Have a blog
6. Help people style clothes (personal shopper)
That's all I can think of right now ... And I could think of roadblocks for every one of them!! :/ a friend of mine just asked me to sell lia Sophia jewelry and I'm terrified I will fail at it because I don't think I'm good at sales!!
I'm stuck I guess ...

goodbyes really suck ...

It's amazing to me how much grief you can go through when friends have to leave. We said goodbye today to Chris and Janice Lewis, as they begin a new ministry in Abilene Texas. Oddly enough, it's the same church where tim and I interned the summer we got married, 16 yrs ago!

We've been friends with Chris and Janice for 10 years. Through those ten years we've spent 5 of them ministering together, and 5 apart. 2 years working alongside the youth dept at Gospel Baptist and then 3 yrs side by side at the church plant here in Ashland Ohio. We moved here to Ashland in 2010, and while we were in the beginning stages of church planting, we laughingly tossed the idea of joining us to them. They lived in Tuscon Arizona at the time. You know what? They prayed ... and they came. They moved across country on their own dime and came to Ashland. I dare you to show me a friend of yours that would do the same!!

We've spent the last 3 years sharing life together. We've shared homes, groceries, gallons of milk, pizzas, kids and church. I looked forward to Janice's impromptu morning visits with a fresh Starbucks in her hand for me. We would talk for hours and she'd change a diaper or two before she had to pick up her girls from school. Our kids were in the hospital a few times and they were there, at our house, taking care of our other children. Last minute. No worries. They were there. Shared many laughs over the awkwardness of our kids, and tears when a child was hurt or wronged or misunderstood.

It has saved my life having another ministry woman to navigate through this difficult church planting journey. To have her understand our struggles, share in them and also lift each other up when the other was down has been God-given.

Janice has been my friend through it all, through many years, distance and closeness. She knows my heart. I'm amazed at the incredible spirit of generosity she and Chris both manage effortlessly. They give without thought of their own comfort. They give before they've had a chance to sit down and enjoy what's been given to them. It's pure and honest and genuine. I've been blessed by that generosity far more than I can count. There was always Coke in my house!!

Their children are like my own daughters. I love their silly honesty and craziness. I love their quirky personalities and how they love back like crazy! They are precious girls. So smart and tender.

My heart is heavy and my eyes are swollen from tears. It feels so lonely now. Praying for the Lord to bless my friends, enlarge their witness and multiply their ability to bless the people around them. Praying protection around their children and their marriage. Praying for provisions to be met and food in their fridge. And a McDonalds coke for when times get tough. I only wish it could be me to bring it over.
